Heian Shrine was built in imitation of Heian-kyo to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the capital's relocation. Legend has it that Heian-kyo was protected by the four gods (Black Tortoise in the north, Blue Dragon in the east, White Tiger in the west, and Vermilion Bird in the south). Thanks to this, Heian Shrine is also under the protection of the four gods and is said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
